The original company was founded in 1875, but the name Napier was first used for jewellery in 1922 and is still actively being produced and marketed today. The Whitney and Rice Company in Atttleboro, Massachusetts, was first founded in 1875, as a silver manufacturing company. In 1882, Whitney and Rice was sold ad renamed E A Bliss and Co. The operations were moved to meriden, Connecticut, in 1890. in 1920, when James Napier became president of E A Bliss and Co, the company was renamed the Napier-Bliss Co. In 1922, the company name became the Napier Company. In the 1980s, the company was sold to Victoria & Co.
There are many different Napier marks. The most commonly found mark is "Napier" in block letter, which was first used in 1922. Collectors prize jewellery marked "Napier Sterling". The copyright symbol was added to the signature after 1955.
