CAROLINE CHARLES Wool Skirt Suit, Medium c.1980s

Minimal elegance was the aim during the 1980s and this skirt suit is a great example. This suit is by Caroline Charles, one of the UK's most respected womenswear designers. Her business has developed over the past four decades and the label is still going strong and marketed throughout the world (read more about this designer below).

The collarless jacket has a V-neck and long inset sleeves with three buttons decorating each cuff. Double-breasted fastening with two buttons at the front and one interior button to hold the jacket in place. There are two spare buttons included. Contour darts at the front and princess seams at the back provide a lovely fitted shape. There are two hip pockets with welts and one small pocket on the left chest. Fully lined including sleeves.

The softly shaped pencil skirt sits on the natural waistline. It has a narrow waistband with rear enclosed zip and button fastener at the top. There is a small back vent measuring 5" (12½ cm) and a hem allowance of 1¾" (4½ cm). Fully lined. Measurements noted below.

Made from pure new wool and has a soft chevron design in tones of rust and brown.  This is perfect for autumn/winter, teamed with boots and a vintage scarf. Both items can be worn with other clothing. The jacket will work beautifully with black, wide-leg trousers and camisole and the skirt can be worn with any number of winter knits.

Both pieces are labelled: Caroline Charles LONDON. UK 14. EUR 40. US 10. Made in England. Pure New Wool. Dry clean only. The measurements provided are of the actual garment so if you measure smaller, this suit should fit you. Due to the waist and hip measurements of the skirt, this is probably more suitable for a modern day UK size 12 (US 8).

Skirt measures:

  • Waist 29" (73½ cm)
  • Hips 39" (99cm)
  • Length, including waistband 26" (66cm)

Jacket measures:

  • Back width 16½" (42cm)
  • Chest 38" (96½ cm)
